The British Market Research Bureau was commissioned by the then Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) in 2008 to organise and facilitate a Parents’ Panel, to comprise around 40 parents, reflecting a wide mix of demographic and attitudinal factors. The Panel met quarterly to discuss a range of issues linked to government policy. Ministers and officials from the then DCSF attended each Panel meeting. Between January 2009 and March 2010 the Panel met seven times.

This research report describes the context, design, conduct and findings of an inquiry into practitioners’ experiences of the Early Years Foundation Stage. The study posed three broad questions within its overarching theme of describing practitioners’ experiences of the EYFS: how does it influence day-to-day practice with children and families; how, if at all, has the EYFS supported improvements in the care and education offered by practitioners; and what obstacles and difficulties do practitioners face in the effective use of the EYFS.

This study is one of a series of projects jointly commissioned by the former Department for Children Schools and Families and Department of Health to strengthen the evidence base on recognition, effective interventions and inter-agency working in child abuse and neglect. This project has a focus on the consequences of decisions to reunify children who had entered the looked after system for abuse or neglect. It compares the progress and outcomes of a sample of maltreated children who either went home or remained in the looked after system.
